Sunday 4 May is International Dawn Chorus Day and this year's Dawn Chorus project is back with exciting new features in both the app and the website.

The Dawn Chorus app and website, developed by Natural Apptitude for BIOTOPIA, is a free app used by thousands of people worldwide to record morning birdsong and upload their recordings in situ. As birds face increasing pressures from habitat loss and climate change, these recordings provide crucial data on species distribution and population trends.

This year, the Dawn Chorus app and website have evolved, offering a more immersive and insightful experience - focused on enhancing both the user experience and the depth of information available.

What's New in the Dawn Chorus Project?

  • A Smoother App Experience: We've revamped the app's design, making it even easier to record and explore the dawn chorus.
  • A More Interactive Website : The Dawn Chorus website map has undergone a transformation. Dive deeper into the data with:
    • Advanced Filtering: Find exactly what you're looking for with enhanced filter options, and save your custom filters for future use.
    • Insightful statistics on selected recordings:  Select multiple audio recordings directly on the map to view statistics on bird species, location types, and other recorded sounds
    • Select and listen: Group select the recordings you want and hit play to listen to all the bird songs one at a time.

  • Personalised Birding Data:  Track your recordings, the bird species you've identified, and your average recording times with greater clarity.

AI Takes Flight

After nearly a year of analysis, our AI, powered by BirdNET, has now processed all your recordings. Explore AI-identified species, see its confidence levels, and compare its findings with user-submitted identifications. It's a fascinating glimpse into the power of AI in citizen science.

Over the course of our collaboration, Natural Apptitude has proven to be a reliable and well-structured partner with a deep understanding of our project goals and purpose. The primary goal for the new release was to enhance user benefits by incorporating AI voice recognition results from BirdNET into various features of the app, providing useful statistics and valuable research options. Natural Apptitude has made significant contributions to the project through their skills, innovative ideas, and thoughtful creativity.

Join the Chorus!

Whether you're a seasoned birder or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, the Dawn Chorus project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to vital scientific research. May is the main collection time so download the app today, set your alarm (ideally 30 minutes before sunrise), upload your recordings and marvel at the incredible symphony of nature on your doorstep - maybe with a strong cup of coffee 😉. You don’t need to live in the countryside to take part either. The Dawn Chorus project wants records from urban, suburban and rural areas.

Visit the Dawn Chorus website for more information and to download the app. Together, we can help protect the birds that fill our world with song.
