Assessing soil health has traditionally been a laborious and inconsistent process, relying on methods like 'worm-pits' and chemical testing. Recognising this challenge, Soil Acoustics Ltd, following research with the University of Warwick, developed the Soil Acoustic Meter(SAM) – an innovative device designed to quickly and easily assess soil health by listening to the hidden world beneath our feet. Healthy soil is vital for food production, biodiversity, and climate resilience, making rapid and reliable assessment critical.
The Challenge
Finding a way to transform the raw data
The SAM is a hand-held unit connected to a probe containing a contact microphone which captures three-minute samples of sounds made by invertebrates moving in the soil. However, the raw acoustic data required a sophisticated solution for processing, analysis, and user-friendly reporting. Soil Acoustics Ltd needed a partner with expertise in software development and environmental data analysis to transform this raw data into actionable insights. The Solution
Natural Apptitude designed and developed an innovative data portal that transforms raw SAM recordings into immediate, actionable insights
Within seconds of uploading data, users receive a Soil Acoustic Quality Index (SAQI) score and a comprehensive summary report. A higher SAQI score is generally associated with a higher abundance and variety of invertebrates, suggesting healthier, more biologically active soil.
Our portal analyses complex acoustic data, enabling users to:
- Instantly obtain SAQI scores and visualise trends
- Organise and label recordings by land use and cover type for detailed analysis
- Track changes in soil health over time
- Compare data across locations
- Securely download and store their complete dataset
- Integrate findings seamlessly into broader biodiversity and land management initiatives
